The Senate recently passed the Children and Media Research and
Advancement Act (CAMRA), which calls for a study by the Center for
Disease Control (CDC) to investigate the impact of video games and
other media on the development of children. You can thank Senators
Clinton (D-NY), Lieberman (D-CT), Brownback (R-KS), Durbin (D-IL)
and Santorum (R-PA) for this one.
Obviously, this bill has bipartisan support, as it appeals to both
Democrats who want an over-regulated nanny state and Republicans,
who want to impose their moral values on you. The phrase "think of
the children" carries more weight politically than the United
States Constitution, apparently.
Although the government has no business conducting this study in
the first place, I can only hope that it will not find a
significant causal link between video games and the issues
described, because I am sure that even the most tenuous association
made will be blown out of proportion by leglisators seeking easy
votes from soccer moms.
Oh well. I'm sure the CDC has nothing better to do.
Anyway,
here's a link to the story.
