Slashdot has a links to
several
stories popping up all over the nation about Republicans
setting up an extremely annoying telemarketing campaign, designed
to make it seem like it is Democratic candidates who are the ones
doing the telemarketing!
This it how it works. You get a phone call that starts with an
automated message that sounds something like "Hello. I'm calling
with information about (Democratic Candidate's Name Here)." There's
a pause, and if the person hangs up, they receive another call,
reportedly up to
eighteen calls or more. If they do stay on
the line, they hear a smear message about the Democratic
candidate.
Since the phone calls [illegally] do not begin with information
about who is making the call and many are inclined to hang up
before the message gets to the end, many people who have received
these "robocalls" think that they're being made on behalf of the
Democratic candidate.
Evidently, this is a ploy by the Republican Congressional Committee
to compel everyone who hates telemarketers (and that's definitely a
majority of Americans) to stay home or vote against the Democratic
candidates.
Once again, I must implore everyone to get to vote tomorrow. Get
these juvenile liars out of office (or make sure they stay out) by
voting for their opposition. I assure you, this telemarketing thing
is one of the
least compelling reasons to rebuke them.

Also, I haven't heard any reports of Democratic candidates doing it to the same extreme as the Republicans -- pairing the deceptive "I'm calling with info about" intro with nearly incessant callbacks.
Though maybe they're doing the exact same thing and I just haven't read about it yet. Slashdot isn't exactly a conservative-leaning blog.
Either way, it's sad that our national political discourse has fallen to this level.

Now, how about all those dead voters in NY State?

I think election reform is one of the most important things we need to do in this country. It's way too easy to illegally fix elections (close ones, at least) and that needs to change, and people responsible for doing, when caught, should be punished the same way someone found guilty of treason would be (well, I don't support the death penalty, but my point is, I think it should be treated as a crime of similar magnitude).
Securing our elections is the first, most important step in shoring up our crumbling democracy.

I heard someone on the news this morning complaining about how Sarbanes Oxley had crippled the economy for a while, but nobody realizes that in the corporate world, there no longer exists accountability, so the government has to appoint a watchdog for it. While Enron and Globalcomm didnt start doing their nefarious and unethical things in 2000, if not for Sarb-Ox, many, many more collapses would be felt. Pension plans are being converted because suddenly, too many corps are realizing that they actually are supposed to now account for what they are doing.
The people that should be in politics dont bother running because its no longer people caring about how this country is being run but how we can feed the greed of a different group this year, be they the corporate fat cats or the too lazy to work/study/be productive poor.
